Celebrating the Hard Work of our Neighbors!

In the midst of all of the Christmas festivities, we took some time to honor and celebrate the incredible effort of hundreds of adult English Learners. Each have demonstrated faithful, consisted and diligent attendance and effort as well as hit the benchmark to advance in their understanding of the English language.

We also celebrated the beautiful creativity of the many women involved in Fruitful Sewing! This program has been flourishing in recent years as Kathleen Funderburk continues to train new teachers from her students, empowering them with the opportunity to stitch together a community of supportive women, sharing life and the love that God offers.

Our team of teachers and tutors offer dozens of hours each week, creating a welcoming space for each adult student to belong and learn. During each celebration in Portland and Lewiston, I noted the clear joy on the faces of both the students and the teachers. This is the result of relationships that are steeped with love. Cultural and language barriers are real, but there is something tangible that happens when God’s people are radically welcoming. Those “barriers” become gifts. They make the space unique and full of life.

These celebrations - the work, the joy, the joining of cultures - are a brief taste of the Kingdom that is to come.

In 2024, we served more than 1000 students in our English programs across Portland and Lewiston. Our small, but mighty team of teachers and tutors would love for YOU to consider joining this effort to welcome, teach and build lasting friendships with our new neighbors. Blessings are a two way street around here, so we know you will love it.

Joel Furrow

Before joining The Root Cellar's ministry in Lewiston in 2012, Joel implemented and directed the Bridging the Gap Juvenile Diversion program in Boston, MA serving nearly 100 juvenile offenders annually.

Early in this career, Joel was impacted greatly by work within refugee communities in Amman, Jordan and Clarkston, GA. He discovered God's great love for these vulnerable communities as well as the gift that refugees and immigrants offer to a welcoming city.

Joel is a graduate of Liberty University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Religion with a concentration in Intercultural Studies, Islam and Arabic. Joel and his lovely wife Hilary live in Wales, ME raising 3 beautiful, wicked smaht daughters and a baby boy.
