A Season of Celebration!

We are officially launching a season of celebration! We are looking back at all the ways God has proven faithful to our neighbors through the decades - and looking forward with great anticipation to what is next!

In 1984, a group of Mennonite missionaries were lead by God to partner with a local church serving within the most impoverished and violent community in Portland, ME.

These volunteers opened a teen center for “street kids” in the humblest of settings - a dirt floor basement, previously used as cold storage for vegetables - a root cellar.

This new ministry quickly grew, serving younger siblings and adding a food pantry for local families.

Much has changed over the years - different staff, additional neighborhoods and ever changing neighbors, but our mission, hope and prayer for our neighbors remain unchanged.

As we look back, it’s clear that God has been with us through the decades.

As we look forward, it’s clear that God is just getting started.

YOU are Invited!

Over the next few months there will be several ways for you to join in on the celebration. We are blessed with the opportunity to work along side our neighbors in Portland and Lewiston - so instead of 1 party - we are throwing two!

YOU are invited to join us for a special night as we celebrate God’s faithfulness to our neighbors through the years. We will break bread together, worship and hear the stories of how God has been at work in and through The Root Cellar over the years, today and how we anticipate where He is leading us in the future.

FRIDAY, 10/18 FROM 6-8PM @ EAST AUBURN BAPTIST CHURCH

FRIDAY, 11/01 FROM 6-8PM @ THE ROOT CELLAR IN PORTLAND

During this season of celebration, would you consider making a special gift to support our work?

We are praying for 40 NEW monthly partners to join us. Monthly partners are critical to our ministry, allowing us to plan wisely and respond to needs quickly.

It is an honor to be partnered with you in this work.

Joel Furrow

Before joining The Root Cellar's ministry in Lewiston in 2012, Joel implemented and directed the Bridging the Gap Juvenile Diversion program in Boston, MA serving nearly 100 juvenile offenders annually.

Early in this career, Joel was impacted greatly by work within refugee communities in Amman, Jordan and Clarkston, GA. He discovered God's great love for these vulnerable communities as well as the gift that refugees and immigrants offer to a welcoming city.

Joel is a graduate of Liberty University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Religion with a concentration in Intercultural Studies, Islam and Arabic. Joel and his lovely wife Hilary live in Wales, ME raising 3 beautiful, wicked smaht daughters and a baby boy.
