Damon is trying something crazy!

Our own Damon Crouse is attempting a 24 hour SkiMo to raise support for Lew Crew, our Teen Work Experience Program!

What’s a SkiMo? Who is Damon? Why would he try something so crazy?

Good questions - keep reading!

Damon Crouse has been coordinating the Lew Crew teen ministry in Lewiston for the past few years. He’s the fuel behind projects like Lew Crew Lawn Care and Common Grounds Cafe and so many other programs for our teens.

Starting at 4pm on January 24 at Lost Valley in Auburn, Damon will be attempting a 24 Hour Skimo (which is the act of skiing up the mountain by your own power and then skiing back down) with the goal of raising $24,000 for Lew Crew Teen Work Experiences!

I asked Damon why he would (voluntarily) want to do something this nuts. Here’s what Damon had to say!

“It’s because I absolutely love the teens I get to work with,” Damon said. “I love all the different opportunities we get to provide them through The LewCrew.”

At The Root Cellar, our LewCrew teens are given their very first chance at a job, working as lawn care specialists, baristas in our Common Grounds Cafe, English language teachers as well as mentors to the younger kids in our programming. Work is just one aspect of LewCrew, we also incorporate growing, playing  and gathering together, preparing them for all that life throws at them and discovering the plan that God has for their lives.

Teens in LewCrew also given the opportunity every winter to learn how to ski and in turn, help to teach the younger children.  Other opportunities include woodworking, guitar, personal finance, crafting and sewing. We gather together every Tuesday evening for a meal and games.

Lew Crew Teens also operate Common Ground Cafe, serving many of our homeless neighbors as well as those who do not have the ability to pay for a hand crafted latte and a breakfast sandwich. Through Common Grounds cafe, teens are given the skills to work in a fast-pace, high demand job while learning to serve and care for each customer who comes through our doors.

Will you join me in this awesome work and make a pledge for each lap I am able to complete?

My goal is 20 laps in 24 hours, anything that you can give would be a huge help for our programming!

Early in this career, Joel was impacted greatly by work within refugee communities in Amman, Jordan and Clarkston, GA. He discovered God's great love for these vulnerable communities as well as the gift that refugees and immigrants offer to a welcoming city.

Joel is a graduate of Liberty University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Religion with a concentration in Intercultural Studies, Islam and Arabic. Joel and his lovely wife Hilary live in Wales, ME raising 3 beautiful, wicked smaht daughters and a baby boy.
