What does it look like to love your neighbor?

That is the question we try to answer each day through our programs and services. Through close relationships, we encourage each individual’s to use God-given talents, gifts and purpose for the benefit of others.

We design our programs to create community. We work to create opportunities for neighbors to take on leadership responsibilities, recognizing that they are indeed integral to our mission. We believe a key to responding to these challenges starts with the belief that everyone has something to contribute.

health + Wellness

Access to healthy food, medical and dental care is one of the greatest challenges that our neighbors face in Portland and Lewiston.

Friends and neighbors networks (FANN)

The statistics for food insecurity in our state, especially in our two most densely populated cities, Portland and Lewiston, are well documented.  According to the USDA, 16.4% of Maine residents struggle with food security.

The problem is not, however, as simple as providing food for families. FANN, or Friends and Neighbors Network, is a multi-tiered approach to addressing food security in our cities.  We are now in our fifth year of operating this model in both our Portland and Lewiston locations and have already seen a dramatic transformation in the lives of the families served.

Those in need of food are vested members of a network, working together to provide a unique system that provides food to one another. Members are key contributors to the success of the entire group. The hope is to  create unity across lines of diversity in our FANN membership. As members, participation and relationship with others is necessary. Honoring the value of diversity is constant, real work. The common need of food creates a gathering space where neighbors interact with each other in a way that would normally be avoided.

We are currently serving 165 families (or households) each month representing a total number of almost 750 individuals.

Mentoring

Loving your neighbor as yourself starts with a relationship. Our youth mentoring groups and 1-on-1 matches are incredible examples of what that kind of love looks like when caring adults and youth learn from one another. By sharing life together, these relationships create the space for social, economic and spiritual wholeness can be cultivated and produce the foundation of a new community.

Lewiston Mentoring Groups

All of our youth progams function as a mentor group that - in various forms - work, play, grow, and learn together. In the past year, we have matched over 100 neighborhood youth with mentors, from 6 to 18 years of age. These groups happen seasonally, year round and everything in between.

Our national network

We are a proud partner of the Leadership Foundations of America. Over the last 4 years, we have joined dozens of other like minded organizations across the country to develop a diverse network of Mentoring efforts. It’s truly a blessing to be partnered with so many. Check out all the great work they are doing!

Neighbor Empowerment

What if, instead of doing things for the needy, we chose to partner with our neighbors. What if we recognized that not only does everyone have something to offer, but that what they have can provide for a need of another?

Our Adult Empowerment programs create new opportunities for our neighbors to work together, take on leadership roles and build on thier strengths.

Loving our neighborhoods

It is an incredible blessing and opportunity to be part of the fabric of our communities in Portland and Lewiston. We work along side some amazing organizations, schools, police departments, business owners and residents -each doing thier part to make our neighborhood whole.

something about God's Kingdom being physical and spiritual...God's love of the city...our vision for neighborhoods made whole...

Healthy Neighborhoods network

Our Lewiston based partners are awesome. We are so blessed to be part of this network of residents, organizations, landlords, developers, civic leaders and city officials. Currently, Healthy Neighborhoods is the governing body for a recent HUD grant, aimed at addressing the needs of our Tree Streets Neighborhood’s aging housing stock.
